Literature: Llewellyn, Sacha, and Paul Liss. Portrait of an Artist. Liss Llewellyn, 2021, p.76.

We are grateful to Kenneth McConkey for suggesting that this painting is the work of Sydney Noel Simmons (1880-1916) who died on the Somme.  His interiors are characerised by  a colourful and quirky perspetive  with his figures usually shown silhouette. McConkey has pointed out that  the  mirror reflecting the artist and back wall parallel to the picture plane are all Orpen-esque,

THE ARTIST

Sydney Noel Simmons
Sydney Noel
Simmons
1881 - 1916

Painter born in Addlestone, Surrey the son of a brewer. He studied architecture c. 1901 but where is not known. An artist with the name of ‘S. Noel Simmons’ is recorded in Johnson & Greutzner as having exhibited at the New English Art Club, Walker Art Gallery, Chenil Gallery and at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts until 1938. This is probably an error as Simmons served as a Lieutenant with the Household Cavalry and died in a London Military Hospital of wounds received in battle. Painted furniture and two hand-tufted rugs by Simmons are illustrated in the Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art, 1918 with a note describing him as “the late Lieutenant Noel Simmons”
