“Comrades in Art” – with a special feature on the work of Percy Horton
This online exhibition accompanies Artists International: The First Decade, currently on display at Tate Britain.

At the heart of this movement was the Artists International Association (AIA), founded in 1933. It quickly became a powerful collective, drawing together a broad spectrum of artists committed to anti-fascist causes. Among them were Percy Horton, Laura Knight, Edward Ardizzone and Peter Laszlo Peri—figures united by their belief in art’s power to effect change.

These artists produced posters, prints, illustrations, and paintings that exposed the horrors of war, opposed totalitarianism, and supported workers’ rights. Their efforts were part of a wider international cultural front, linking artists across borders in shared resistance.

This exhibition celebrates a moment when art became activism—and when artists stood not alone, but as comrades in arms.
