This self-portrait shows Dunbar in her early twenties. It is the last and the most ambitious in a series of youthful self-portraits (a number of which are now part of the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). This painting is likely to have been produced c. 1927, at the time Dunbar graduated from the Rochester School of Art. The artist depicts herself in graduation robes, with an ornate brooch around her neck. Fixing the viewer with her gaze, with cropped hair and ruddy cheeks, it is a confident portrait which leaves the viewer in no doubt of the artist’s emerging talent.
