A unique and exciting archive of drawings and ephemera by Evelyn Dunbar, from the family estate. There are 118 drawings contained within the collection (a full inventory attached in separate document), spanning the breadth of Dunbar’s professional career. The earliest work dates from 1922, and the latest, c. 1954. There are important preparatory sketches for Gardener’s Choice – Dunbar’s landmark 1937 gardening handbook. There are life studies from the artist’s time at the Royal College of Art, sketches for her children’s books, and a host of private, sensitive portraits from the Dunbar family home. There is a rare study from her trip to the West Indies in 1952, studies for works in the Imperial War Museum, and an important preparatory drawing for Flight in the collection of the Tate Gallery.
